India–EU trade framework and business support

Sources reviewed 10 October 2026

Trade agreements and support instruments can change the economics of an entry route; their value depends on the product, its origin and the terms in force when you act.

This page gathers official references for automotive and specialist engineering trade between India and Italy. It separates agreement milestones from operational treatment and points product-specific questions to the relevant authorities.

EU–India agreement milestones

Negotiations for the EU–India Free Trade Agreement concluded on 27 January 2026. On 11 September 2026 the European Commission sent proposals to the Council for signature and conclusion.

European Commission agreement overview and updates

The agreement binds only after both parties complete their internal procedures for entry into force. Treat negotiated tariff commitments as provisional until official implementation notices confirm them.

Automotive implications and timing

The Commission’s summary schedules most car-part tariffs for removal over five to ten years. For a specialist supplier, that staging shapes the timing of a route and any investment in local representation.

Start from the sector summary, then confirm the product classification, the applicable schedule and any access conditions. A complete vehicle and a specialist component need separate examination.

Origin and technical requirements

Preferential origin depends on the agreement’s product-specific rules; the country of dispatch alone does not establish it. Check manufacturing and sourcing against those rules and the required proof of origin, alongside technical regulations and conformity assessment.

SIMEST’s Strategic Support for the Indian Market offers financing to eligible Italian companies with investment, commercial or supply-chain interests in India. Its operational circular sets the conditions, and approval depends on assessment and available resources.

Italian incentives for automotive R&D

Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) opens an automotive window of the Accordi per l’innovazione worth €631 million. The application procedure opens on 11 November 2026 and submissions from 25 November 2026, for research and development projects of €5–40 million; 40% of resources are reserved for Southern Italy.

This matters to Indian groups with, or planning, an Italian R&D unit. Eligibility, cost rules and aid ceilings must be confirmed against the decree.

Support relevant to exports from India

For Indian exporters, DGFT’s remission and duty-exemption provisions need a separate eligibility check. RoDTEP remits specified duties and taxes on exports; it is distinct from a preferential import tariff in the destination market. Consult current notifications and product schedules.

Assess the commercial effect

Bring the product classification, manufacturing and sourcing profile, proposed route and timing. These set the assumptions to test and the points that need specialist confirmation.
